What Causes Suicidal Thoughts?

Suicidal thoughts are common and are peculiar with people passing through some emotional stress, such as someone who just lost his/her job or lost a loved one, worst-case scenario. Other causes of suicidal thoughts also include depression, anorexia, substance abuse, and anxiety, there are more, though, but the above mentioned are seen as the most likely causes. Unfortunately, our environment is the major contributor to suicidal thoughts; hence, the way people treat people a times. The commonest way to get people depressed is by saying harsh words or performing a certain action(s) that makes them feel worthless, hopeless, and agitated.

Sometimes, suicidal thoughts might not be entirely emotional, most times it can be medical. An individual with a psychiatric disorder has a very high propensity of having in some kind of suicidal thoughts, of which there are likely possibilities of them acting suicidal.

Again, you must note that suicidal thoughts differ, from adults to children. What ignites suicidal thoughts in adults may not be the same in children and vise vasa. In children, things like being a victim of school bullying, being rejected or physically abused can easily trigger thoughts of suicide. But you can barely see this in adults, some likely causes of suicidal thoughts in adults include:

Genetic History of Psychiatric Disorder

It is genetically proved that an individual is likely to inherit a body physique, psychological temperament, or even an alignment suffered by one of their ancestors. Because of this, one of the later generations may likely inherit such a suicidal genetic structure.

Loss of Loved Ones

This also applies to children, but it is common among adults. When we lose a loved one, we miss them so much that we wish to join them whenever they are. This thought automatically triggers thoughts of committing suicide; hence, meeting them in the underworld.

Abuse of Drugs or Alcohol

This can also be found among teenagers, but a large proportion of adults are guilty of this. Scientifically, taking drugs like Acetaminophen (Tramadol), Hydropmorphone, Tapentadol, Zonisamide, Duloxetine, Trazodone, Doxepin, Triazolam, and over one hundred and fifty more drugs listed to be responsible for throwing one into the depressing mood.

Medical Conditions, which most of the Times may be Incurable

Some people are unfortunate enough to be suffering some incurable diseases like cancer, AIDS, Asthma, Ataxia, Coronavirus, or other ailments that induce excruciating pain on the sufferer. When people like  this couldn’t bear the physical or emotional pains behind these ailments, their minds often play around suicidal thoughts.

Some Common Symptoms of Suicidal Thoughts

There are many warning signs of suicidal thoughts, but we will be listing some common ones which are very prevalent in society today. Below, they are stated as thus:

Excessive Sadness

Some may mistake this for a mood swing, but the difference is that mood swings are always temporary. When one is consistently sad, there is a high tendency that they are suffering from some kind of emotional pains that if help did not come soon enough, suicidal thoughts are likely to take over.

Sudden Calmness

When that extrovert friend of yours suddenly starts being private and quiet, there is a high tendency that they are going through some really difficult time in there. Also, note that one of the major attributes of depression is excessive calmness.

Self-harmful Behavior

People who often think suicide also play it out once in a while; they either humor about it, or act it out once in a while through activities like over speeding, excess alcohol consumption, or intake of harmful drugs like cocaine, tramadol, e.t.c.

Ways to Prevent Suicide Thoughts

We will be listing some preventive steps, including some treatment for suicidal thoughts, but the commonest and the most effective ones are “to be happy.” Even the best suicidal therapist will always advise you to do what you have to do to be and stay happy; that way, you will be training your mind on how to boycott thoughts of suicide, thus, averting the worse. Some other forms of preventing Suicide Thoughts include:

  • Always pay attention to your loved ones, know when they are emotionally distressed then offer help.
  • Filter your words and filter what goes into your mind. The words we say to people can cause serious emotional distress that cab throws them into depression.
  • Watch, do and listen more to things that uplift your spirit.
  • Don’t always be conservative, talk to someone when you need help.

Finally, you must understand that every action is first conceived in our minds, so therefore we must, however, take full control of the things that get in or out of our minds. We must learn how to distract our minds from harming thoughts and switch it to more pleasant ones. Always have an image of happy moments, and master the art of triggering it whenever you are emotionally down. Again, remember that a mind in pain is always vulnerable. Stay safe!
